Samsung Galaxy Note 4: The First Metal "Galaxy" Phone?

Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 could be the first truly "premium" built Galaxy

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 might be the first handset to get the truly “premium” exterior treatment from the Korean manufacturer. According to a report from ET News, there will be at least one variant of the Galaxy Note 4 with a metal bodyshell. It will also include a flexible display panel and a 16MP camera sensor featuring optical image stabilisation (OIS).

The publication’s sources claim Samsung is testing a range of metals for the bodywork, with stainless steel, aluminium, and magnesium being mentioned – we’ve seen aluminium and magnesium phones before, but steel would likely be a first. It’s worth mentioning that the report alleges there will be other variants of the Note 4 made from Samsung’s usual plastic.

Such claims do sit with rumours regarding Samsung’s Galaxy S5 strategy; the Galaxy S5 launched with a plastic body but there have been rumours that a metal version, the Samsung Galaxy F, is on the way to offer a premium alternative, although it is yet to materialise.

Similarly, the flexible display pegged for the premium Note 4 is thought to be swapped with a regular screen on the plastic Note 4. Samsung has reportedly boosted flexible panel production by over 50%. As has been the case with all flexible screens to date, however, don’t expect the touchscreens to actually be foldable; they should simply be a bit more durable than regular panels.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is scheduled for a launch at IFA 2014 in Berlin, Germany, this September. Rumours suggest a metal Galaxy S5 could launch alongside. This will be the first Galaxy Note device which will have to compete with a phablet from Apple, as it’s thought the iPhone maker will launch its own phablet in the same month alongside the iPhone 6.
