New Lollipop build for Samsung Galaxy S5 gets showcased

A few weeks ago we brought you images and video showing what an early build of Android L for the Samsung Galaxy S5 looked like. Since that point, the Korean company's engineers have been hard at work tweaking things and integrating the TouchWiz UI with the new version of Android. And today it's the turn of a newer build of Android 5.0 for the Galaxy S5 to get showcased in all its glory. Android 5.0 Lollipop on Samsung Galaxy S5 Samsung has refined many design bits, as you can see in the first two screenshots above. The device information page still doesn't say the word Lollipop, but the Android version is now listed as 5.0, instead of the "L" we saw last time. The new leaked build has mostly UI enhancements compared to the old one. A fingerprint lock screen like the one in the Galaxy Note 4 is present, there's a new system font, new animations, a Google Search bar in the Recents menu, the brightness slider in the notification area has a new color, "Interruptions" has been removed from Sound settings, the Gallery has new filters, Contacts has a new search box, and stock apps with Material Design get the colored status bar. The green elements in Google's Lollipop theme have been replaced with Samsung's blue, Settings has new icons, there's a new UI for setting the wallpaper, and better spacing between items in the power off dialog. The Music, Clock, and Calculator apps all come with improved designs now too. Clearly Samsung Galaxy S5 owners across the world are eagerly awaiting this update, and it definitely looks like it's progressing nicely. Android 5.0 Lollipop might hit the Galaxy S5 before the end of this year, according to past...

Samsung Ativ S gets updated to Windows Phone 8.1

The Samsung Ativ S is now ready to enter the Windows Phone 8.1 club. Lagging behind several Nokia handsets, the smartphone launched two years ago is finally starting to receive an over-the-air update to Windows Phone 8.1. Owners of the Ativ S in both Italy and Germany have reported getting asked to perform the update. Furthermore, Samsung confirmed the rollout for unbranded units sold in Italy, so other European countries should see it pretty soon, we assume. As is usually the case with such things, the rollout might take a while, so perhaps don't lose sight of your patience just yet. The update comes with a few new features, such as the Action Center for notifications and shortcuts, the ability to use a background image for the tiled home screen, a swipe-enabled keyboard, an optional third row of tiles, improved Bing search, separate volume levels for ringtones and notifications and for media files and apps, a new layout for the Camera app, live folders, and a screen sharing option (that works only via USB). Music and Videos are now two separate apps. The dialer, calendar, task manager, and Internet Explorer have been updated too, sporting better performance and graphics. Through the Google lens: search trends October 23-30

Grab some candy corn and a caramel apple and settle in for a look back at another week in search trends:

Time for trick or treating

With today’s Halloween holiday, people are turning to the web to look for

last-minute costumes and pumpkin-carving tips. Top costume searches include Elsa from Frozen, Anna from Frozen, Olaf from Frozen (people can’t just let it go, can they?) and Maleficent. Whether you’re trick-or-treating or not, get the most out of the twilight hours tonight—Daylight Savings Time comes to an end on Sunday, which means it will be getting darker earlier. At least you get some extra sleep out of the deal.

Sports endings and beginnings

The World Series came to a thrilling conclusion on Wednesday night with Game 7 in Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium, as the San Francisco Giants’ took home their third victory in just five (even) years. The star of the night—and the series—was undoubtedly Madison Bumgarner, the Giants’ 25-year-old ace starting pitcher who came into the game in relief in the fifth inning and more than earned both the save and his MVP trophy, capping off a postseason performance for the history books. He was the top topic in search Wednesday, with more than 1 million searches. Fellow teammates Buster Posey and “Panda” Pablo Sandoval were also on the list.

As baseball fans put their caps and gloves in storage and look longingly at the calendar for March (pitchers and catchers report in 114 days!), fans of the NBA are just getting going. Basketball season started this week and the web was full of searches for the Cleveland Cavaliers (who are welcoming hometown hero Lebron James back to the fold), Miami Heat (the team LeBron left behind) and Chicago Bulls.

Trouble in the skies

There was a spike in searches around NASA when an unmanned rocket erupted into flames seconds after liftoff on Tuesday. The spacecraft and its cargo were lost, and the launch pad suffered heavy damage. Also this week, there was a breakthrough in the mystery of Amelia Earhart’s final flight. A piece of debris located on a tiny island has been identified as a piece of her lost plane.

Movie marvels

Marvel this week revealed a lineup of nine new movies to be released over the coming years, along with some casting details. Alongside familiar faces like Captain America and Iron Man, we’ll soon see a film about the Black Panther, who will be played by Chadwick Boseman. Marvel also revealed that Sherlock star (and Internet fave) Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange in the 2016 movie.

Tip of the week

Don’t get caught off-guard by the changing of the clocks. With the Google app, you can set a reminder to reset the clocks on your microwave, in your car and on your wall as soon as Daylight Savings Time comes to an end on Sunday. Just open the app and say “Ok Google, remind me to change the clocks on Sunday.” Now relax and enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

Samsung Galaxy S5 joins Sprint's device leasing scheme

A couple of weeks ago Sprint introduced its device leasing program, and so far only the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been in it. Through this scheme, you're able to lease a handset by essentially paying Sprint a monthly sum as 'rent'. And now the carrier has announced it's adding two new devices to the leasing roster, namely Samsung's Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S5 Sport (pictured to the left). Beginning today you can grab either smartphone through Sprint Lease and pay $20 per month for it. The lease goes on for two years, after which you have four options. You can give back your S5 or S5 Sport and lease another handset, you can purchase the S5 or S5 Sport you've been using, you can continue leasing it on a month-by-month basis, or you can return the device to Sprint and terminate service. Like in the case of the aforementioned iPhones, if you're an existing Sprint customer and you choose the leasing option before January 15, 2015, you'll only pay $5 per month for the Galaxy S5 or Galaxy S5 Sport. The rest of the terms of the program remain...

Good Hands: NVIDIA IT Pros Take On a Challenge for Charity

ITDay1

Sure, our IT team can work miracles with technology. But can they put together complicated prosthetics one-handed?

It was at least fun to watch them try. More than 60 gathered at our Santa Clara campus for the devilish challenge. After dividing into teams of three, they put the kits together using just one of their own hands. It wasn’t easy.

But it took the teams of experienced IT pros only an hour to assemble 22 fully functioning prosthetic hands. The Ellen Meadows Prosthetic Hand Foundation’s “Give a Hand Project,” will give these devices to people in need all over the world.

ITDay2The idea, says Dave Reisenauer, senior director, IT business operations, is to combine team building with making a difference.

It’s definitely work worth doing and the effort is one that goes beyond our Santa Clara campus.

Our global IT team declared October to be the official IT Giving Month – and building prosthetic hands is just part of that effort. IT team members from Hong Kong to Europe set up libraries at public schools, volunteered at local food banks, cleaned up scenic spots, and helped school kids learn what it’s like to work in IT.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPshadowplay

Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes and hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a post announcing the weekend’s project every Friday.

The goal this weekend is to capture creative photos and videos that feature strong shadows. Some tips to get you started:

  • When composing your shot, tap on the brightest part of the screen to set the exposure. This will give you the deepest, most dramatic shadows.

  • Shadows add unexpected shapes to any setting. Whether in the office, at home or out in nature, wait for bright sunlight and look to see how the shadows fall.

  • You don’t need to look any further than your windows to find inspiration. Sunlight streaming through window blinds creates particularly photogenic stripes.

For more inspiration, browse the #chasingharshlight, #acertainslantoflight, #zebraoclock and #harshlightdoneright hashtags.

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPshadowplay hashtag only to photos taken over this weekend and only submit your own photographs to the project. Any tagged image taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured Monday morning.

Limited edition Gresso Regal encases Android 4.2 in titanium

Form over function becomes more appealing when there's exclusivity involved - only 999 units of the new Gresso Regal will be produced. The Android-powered smartphone follows Gresso's Luxury minimalism design tradition and is based on a Grade 5 solid titanium plate. Gresso tries to hide its snark when it points out that key advantages of titanium are extra durability and resistance to bending. It takes 8 labor-intensive hours to mill the case on high-tech equipment. Gresso Regal "Directional polishing" is applied to the back panel, which takes 3 hours to create the desired metal texture, which the company claims makes the panel light but durable. The Gresso logo (also made of titanium) itself takes 2 hours to machine and then it goes to manual polishing. It's attached to the phone with special titanium screws. The Gresso Regal measures 8.8mm thick, which allegedly makes it the "thinnest luxury phone on the market" (it's certainly not the thinnest overall, Oppo R5 is about half as thick). That's it for the luxury, here are the geek specs: a 5" 1080p screen with Gorilla Glass, 1.5GHz quad-core processor (not clear what kind), Android 4.2, 13MP main camera and a 5MP selfie camera, plus 32GB of storage. The Gresso Regal is already available for purchase through www.gresso.com and will set you back $3,000. The company provides free worldwide delivery. Each phone will be stamped with a number and the numbers only go up to 999. Not that the luxury smartphone market is...

OnePlus one leaks with yellow StyleSwap back, possibly Kevlar

We've seen the OnePlus One in Sandstone black, in white, in wood, bamboo and even in Denim but we haven't seen it in Kevlar, until now. Two images have surfaced showing the OnePlus One with an interesting yellow back that could be the Kevlar back OnePlus teased a while back with its StyleSwap covers. OnePlus One kevlar back (click to expand) StyleSwap was the idea to allow users to change the back panels of the OnePlus One but has proven an issue for the company, which hasn't rolled it out just yet. It means to soon, though - a small portion of Bamboo back covers have been made and could soon become available to users. The OnePlus One is set to go on another pre-order on November 17 so perhaps we'll see this limited edition model along with a Bamboo one then. Source |...

LG G3 Dual-LTE launches in Russia in early November

LG has officially revealed its plans to launch a dual-SIM version of the G3 in Russia. Dubbed the LG G3 Dual-LTE, the phone will make its debut in the country in early November. The suggested retail price is about $640 (RUB 26,990). The phone has been on sale in China and Hong Kong since September. In Hong Kong, the phone retails for a similar price - $645 (HKD 4,998). Just like the single-SIM version, the LG G3 Dual-LTE sports a 5.5" QHD IPS display, a Snapdragon 801 chipset with a quad-core 2.5GHz CPU and 3GB of RAM. The phone features a 13MP camera with laser autofocus and a 3,000mAh battery. Internal storage is 32GB but is expandable up to 128GB more thanks to the microSD card slot. However, don't be fooled by the phone's name, as only the first SIM card slot supports LTE, while the other is limited to GSM connectivity only. LG will offer the device in metallic black and silky white. There's no information if the phone will make it outside the country just yet, but we'll be keeping eye if anything new pops up. Soundbites Gone Wrong: MobileIron’s Bob Tinker

On Wednesday afternoon, MobileIron announced their Q3 2014 earnings and their CEO Bob Tinker added color to the results during a Q&A with investors. So today we need to set the record straight with a #BBFactCheck of a few careless comments by Tinker.

“As the requirements of customers expanded from MDM to mobile application management, mobile content management and data security in motion, the customer requirements expanded. At the same time, the competitive landscape has significantly narrowed.

If you’d asked me six months ago, I’d say the competitive landscape had really narrowed to four. At this point, it’s really narrowed down to two. We don’t see Good very often. We see Citrix fading. The only one we really see competitively is us and VMWare/AirWatch. And again, they tend to be more focused on the SMB side of the business.”

some IT executives are experiencing “a nightmare” dealing with competitive platforms and their end users want BlackBerry back

Tinker’s view is myopic. Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) is far from a two-player game. Experts at analyst firms count at least 15 vendors important enough to rank. We agree that the competitive view has changed in six months – back then “BlackBerry migration” was trendy; today it’s tired. It was much easier to go public. And BlackBerry was just beginning to show its full potential by making new investments, delivering on the product roadmap and demonstrating a fighting spirit.

While the EMM landscape continues to evolve, the biggest challenge for MobileIron will be to keep up. With yesterday’s reported cash burn rate and the limited amount of money the company has in the bank, one must call into question their ability to deliver new products and services to keep up with this rapidly changing and demanding market.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry has a comfortable cash position, and we have led and will continue to lead in what matters most for customers: security, multi-platform capabilities and value-added services. Our support footprint for our customers and our channel partners is global, not North American-centric. And, we are connected into over 675 carriers around the world, and in addition to our EMM solution, we operate a secure global network infrastructure that supports the global footprint that our customers require.

“Generally we are seeing less price aggressiveness from the one competitor we see the most, AirWatch. The exception is legacy players we see, like BlackBerry and Microsoft, who try to give their stuff away for free because they have no choice.”

BlackBerry’s EZ Pass migration program was implemented not because we had to, but to give our loyal customers an easy way to upgrade to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES10). And we do have a choice when it comes to this promotional effort – in fact, EZ Pass has been so successful that we are considering ending the program early.

BlackBerry has a comfortable cash position, and we have led and will continue to lead in what matters most for customers: security, multi-platform capabilities and value-added services.

Even if Tinker disagrees with our current migration program, he can’t deny its effectiveness. More than 3.4 million licenses have been traded in to-date, including 840,000 from competitors including MobileIron. Regardless, BlackBerry has an install base that is many times that of MobileIron.

“BlackBerry migration is alive and well.”

The truth is, some IT executives are experiencing “a nightmare” dealing with competitive platforms and their end users want BlackBerry back. The FUD that Tinker’s marketing team has been pushing is no longer relevant. And, you’ll notice Tinker doesn’t even mention security in his FUD because the industry still regards BlackBerry as the gold standard in that category. We have re-energized our base of customers and supporters and the market is ready for BlackBerry to lead the industry into a new era for enterprise mobility.
