ويسري التقييد الجديد على المستخدمين الحاليين والجدد وذلك وفق تاريخ الميلاد المدخل في التطبيق، وهو بكل تأكيد ليس حلاً أكيداً للمشكلة التي يواجهها التطبيق.
ودفعت إدارة التطبيق مبلغ 5.7 مليون دولار لتسوية القضية المرفوعة ضدها لانتهاك قانون حماية خصوصية الأطفال عبر الإنترنت COPPA. ويطلب هذا القانون من المواقع والتطبيقات الحصول على موافقة الوالدين لاستخدام أطفالهم خدماتها وتحت إشرافهم.
وسيقوم التطبيق بحذف كل مقاطع الفيديو التي سبق أن نشرها أطفال سجلوا أعمارهم في الموقع تحت 13 سنة.
وسيبقى من أعمارهم تحت 13 سنة قادرين فقط على مشاهدة ما ينشره الآخرون ولكن عبر تصفية المحتوى.
واشتكى بعض المستخدمون من حذف مقاطعهم بالرغم من أن أعمارهم فوق 13 سنة، وهنا طالبتهم إدارة الموقع بإرسال صورة عن بطاقات الهوية الخاصة بهم لتأكيد ذلك.

كشف تقرير جديد أن ساعة آبل مازالت سيدة السوق في قطاع الساعات الذكية متفوقة على سامسونج أو حتى شركات متخصصة مثل Garmin.
وبحسب أرقام Strategy Analytics فإن 51% من مبيعات الساعات الذكية حول العالم تعود إلى ساعة آبل تحديداً، والمبشر أن هناك نمو في مبيعات هذه الأجهزة القابلة للإرتداء بنحو 56% في عام 2018 مقارنة بالعام السابق.
وجاءت شركة Fitbit في المركز الثاني ومن بعدها سامسونج و Garmin على التوالي. وبلغت إجمالي شحنات الساعات الذكية في عام 2018 ما مقداره 45 مليون قطعة منها 22.5 مليون ساعة ذكية من آبل.
ومع أن آبل مسيطرة على السوق حالياً، إلا أن حصتها تراجعت عن السابق بسبب منافسة سامسونج و Garmin. وبلغت شحنات آبل 9.2 مليون ساعة ذكية في الربع الأخير من السنة الماضية بزيادة 18% عن السنة السابقة حيث شحنت في نفس الربع 7.8 مليون ساعة.
في حين ارتفعت حصة سامسونج إلى 13.2% من خلال شحنات 2.4 مليون ساعة في الربع الأخير مقارنة مع 600 ألف ساعة تم شحنها بنفس الربع من عام 2017.

اكتشف إحدى الباحاثات الأمنيين أن تويتر تختبر خاصية إدارة الردود بحيث يمكن للمستخدم إخفاء ردود الآخرين على تغريداته المتسلسلة مع إبقاء زر لعرض التغريدات المخفية.
وعبر الهندسة العكسية توصّلت الباحثة Jane Manchun Wong إلى وجود خيار إخفاء تغريدات مستخدم نشر تغريدة تحت تغريدة متسلسلة، وعند الضغط على خيار الإخفاء ستظهر فقط تغريدات المستخدم صاحب السلسلة مع وجود خيار إظهار التغريدات المخفية يمكن لباقي المستخدمين ضغطه لمعرفة كل التغريدات ضمن السلسلة سواء التي تعود لصاحب السلسلة أم للبقية.
بالطبع لم تبدأ بعد تويتر اختبار الميزة على حدد محدود من مستخدميها حتى ما يعني أنها مازالت ضعيفة احتمال إصدارها واعتمادها لاسيما أنها قد يساء استخدامها من قبل بعض المستخدمين مثل السياسيين وأصحاب الرأي والتأثير بحيث يخفون تغريدات معارضيهم بالرأي بالرغم من وجود خيار عرض الردود المخفية.
وتعاني تويتر كل فترة من انتقادات تطالها بشأن حرية التعبير خاصة عندما يستخدمها بعض الشخصيات الهامة مثل الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب أو مدراء الشركات مثل إيلون ماسك وغيرهم لعرض آرائهم والتواصل مع الجمهور.

تتوالى التقارير التي تعمل على رصد حركة السوق خلال العام الماضي، وفي أحدث هذه التقارير التي نشرت مؤخراً كشف عن تطورات جديدة في مبيعات الساعات الذكية خلال 2018.
ويكشف التقرير عن مبيعات ابل من الساعات الذكية التي وصلت إلى 22.5 مليون وحدة من بينها الإصدارات القديمة من ساعات Apple Watch إلى جانب الإصدار الأخير أيضاً، حيث سيطرت مبيعات ابل على 50% من إجمالي الساعات الذكية التي تم شحنها في 2018.
بينما شغل المركز الثاني في مبيعات الساعات الذكية خلال عام 2018 شركة Fitbit، التي حققت مبيعات وصلت إلى 5.5 مليون وحدة في 2018، وبالرغم من أنه عدد أقل بفارق كبير عن مبيعات ابل، إلا أن نسبة مبيعات Fitbit من الساعات الذكية تفوقت بها على مبيعات العملاق الكوري سامسونج.

If you’ve been thinking about jumping on the Apple Watch train, you can do it today for a cheaper than ever before. Amazon is selling the white Watch Series 3 for just $220, which is $60 off the normal price.
This deal is only for a specific model, though: the white 38mm version of the Series 3. If you go for the Space Gray model, the price jumps to $250. Similarly, if you have a meaty wrist and ant the 42mm version, expect a price bump—by almost $100, in fact. That’s nuts.
The Series 3 Apple Watch has all of the features that you’d expect from a premium smartwatch. It mirrors notifications from your phone, monitors your heart rate, and helps you keep track of your fitness goals. You can also make calls or control Siri from the Apple watch, and of course, you can use it to check the time.
Keep in mind that Series 3 is the previous generation Apple Watch. If you want to perform ECGs, then you’ll need to wait for the Series 4 Apple Watch to go on sale.

Most people can’t detect an earthquake until the ground under their feet is already shaking or sliding, leaving little time to prepare or take shelter.
Scientists are trying to short circuit that surprise using the critical time window during the spread of seismic waves out from a temblor’s hypocenter — an earthquake’s underground point of origin.
With a speedy warning, government agencies, transportation officials and energy companies could halt trains and shut off power lines to mitigate damage — and give people a chance to brace themselves.
“The further you are from where an earthquake starts, the more time you have,” said Zachary Ross, postdoctoral scholar at Caltech Seismological Laboratory. “Having an extra 10 seconds might be really useful for preventing devastation.”
Typical detection systems take about a minute to send an earthquake alert. “The system will wait until all the data has come in and seismic waves have traveled across the whole network before making a final decision,” Ross said.
Early warning systems that send out an alert within seconds are difficult to develop because there’s a limited amount of data available for seismologists to make a decision.
With more time and data from multiple sensors, it’s easier for scientists to rule out false positives caused by nearby construction or traffic, or major earthquakes occurring halfway across the globe.
Using three NVIDIA GPUs and a labeled database of more than 250,000 Southern California earthquakes, Ross is developing neural networks to analyze seismograms, which are records of ground motion taken by a sensor.
One of his deep learning models uses convolutional neural networks to look at a single sensor at a time to identify seismic waves, narrowing down the sensor’s datastream to a handful of discrete times with seismic activity.
A second model, a recurrent neural network, recognizes wave patterns from several sensors over the course of a seismic event. The system unscrambles events that include multiple earthquakes in quick succession, and can reduce false triggers by a factor of 100 — greatly improving the reliability for early warning systems.
These models are fairly transferable, Ross found.
“The models show that the first-order characteristics of seismic waves are the same just about everywhere,” he said. “We were able to take a model trained entirely on Southern California earthquake data and apply it to Japan without retraining at all. That was not a capability that we had before.”
Deep learning can also help recognize small earthquakes, 90 percent of which are missed by existing signals, Ross said. By better capturing earthquakes of all sizes, AI can help researchers like Ross better understand the physics of earthquakes and faults.
“The large events tend to occur once every several hundred years or few thousand years, which is much longer than the record we have,” he said. “There’s hope that by using these smaller, more frequent earthquakes we can learn something about the general science behind the problem that we couldn’t get otherwise.”

Headphone jacks on phones are almost dinosaurs these days. With the exception of Samsung and LG, most phone makers have removed the 3.5mm input. That has brought a renaissance of wireless audio devices to emerge over the last few years. Apple released AirPods back in 2017 and while they do work on Android, many of us have been waiting for the “Googled” version.
A relatively new company, Mobvoi, has heard the call and released the TicPods Free earbuds late last year. While they initially look like a colored knockoff of AirPods (which is a warranted first take), they offer some unique options for those of us looking for sleek Bluetooth earbuds for our Android phones.
As mentioned the hardware design is very similar to Apple’s AirPods. The earbuds have a teardrop style earpiece with a long stem that protrudes outside and down the ear. The packaging includes two different size silicone tips for a snug fit in most ears. One thing that surprised me was that the TicPods are covered in a soft touch coating. It offers a nice tactile feel to just slick plastics used in many electronics.
Also covered in this same material finish is the charging case. One downside of the soft touch covering is that is prone to showing fingerprints and oils. The case will charge the devices when away from the outlet as well. Mobvoi rates the overall battery life of the TicPods earbuds and case combo to last 18 hours, but more on that later.
One separation point for the TicPods Free earbuds and other devices are the touch controls built into the stems. They are also unique depending on which earbud you use to input touch.
You can adjust the volume for music or phone calls by dragging your finger up in down from either earbud. Both will also skip to the next song with a double tap. This one is confusing as both offering input, but there’s no way to go back a track and only the next song can be initiated.
A long press of 2 seconds offers you play/pause while listening to music on the left bud. The same on the right TicPods will launch Google Assistant on the left and will reject a caller while the phone app is ringing. The left earbud offers no other features during a phone call.
One last interaction is that each bud has in-ear detection. If you remove them for any reason, the playback will stop. Want to resume where you left off? Simply put the earbud back in your ear. It’s a little trick that really comes in handy when around other people to quickly ask, or answer, a question.
Let’s be honest, if you are reading this review you really just want to know how the audio sounds, right? Well, it’s just OK. The sound is crisps and clear, but I think they could be louder overall. While they have passive noise isolation, I have had times in a busy room where they just weren’t as high volume as I’d like.
Other devices like my Pixel Buds offer a more robust sound in a wired format, but maybe this is too be expected from the new wireless world. It doesn’t deter me from using the TicPods Free, however. I really like the form factor and portability of the earbuds.
Speaking of portability, I’ve found that the 18 total hours of playback with using the case to top off the buds when not in use is pretty close to my results. I get about 3 and half hours of mixed usage between phone calls and music with the buds and can top off at least 3 times with the case before reaching for the power cord. I do with that cord was USB-C too. Micro USB is so 2016.
ConclusionI really enjoy the TicPods Free wireless earbuds from Mobvoi. The company is quickly building a nice portfolio of Android accessories that’s pretty impressive for the budget minded. The TicPods will set you back $129 dollars and come in 3 different colors: Ice White, Lava Red, and Navy. You can pick them direct from Mobvoi or Amazon right now.

A Z-Score is a statistical value that tells you how many standard deviations a particular value happens to be from the mean of the entire data set. You can use AVERAGE and STDEV.S or STDEV.P formulas to calculate the mean and standard deviation of your data and then use those results to determine the Z-Score of each value.
A Z-Score is a simple way of comparing values from two different data sets. It is defined as the number of standard deviations away from the mean a data point lies. The general formula looks like this:
=(DataPoint-AVERAGE(DataSet))/STDEV(DataSet)
Here’s an example to help clarify. Say you wanted to compare the test results of two Algebra students taught by different teachers. You know the first student got a 95% on the final exam in one class, and the student in the other class scored 87%.
At first glance, the 95% grade is more impressive, but what if the teacher of the second class gave a more difficult exam? You could calculate the Z-Score of each student’s score based on the average scores in each class and the standard deviation of the scores in each class. Comparing the Z-Scores of the two students could reveal that the student with the 87% score did better in comparison to the rest of their class than the student with the 98% score did in comparison to the rest of their class.
The first statistical value you need is the ‘mean’ and Excel’s “AVERAGE” function calculates that value. It simply adds up all of the values in a cell range and divides that sum by the number of cells containing numerical values (it ignores blank cells).
The other statistical value we need is the ‘standard deviation’ and Excel has two different functions to calculate the standard deviation in slightly different ways.
Previous versions of Excel only had the “STDEV” function, which calculates the standard deviation while treating the data as a ‘sample’ of a population. Excel 2010 broke that into two functions that calculate the standard deviation:
Which you choose is based on your data set. The difference will usually be small, but the result of the “STDEV.P” function will always be smaller than the result of the “STDEV.S” function for the same data set. It is a more conservative approach to assume there is more variability in the data.
