[Video] LG Optimus G Pro Already going Hands-On at MWC

lg-optimus-g-pro

LG has their answer to the Galaxy Note. The LG Optimus G Pro. A 5.5-inch version of the sexy Optimus G. This phone has been talked about the last few weeks, and we have not really talked about much on our site. I think we just were not in the mood to cover yet another phablet. With that though, it has been spotted at MWC and the sites that were lucky enough to go, have already been posting videos showing off all what it has.

Now I am not a fan of the phablets. My hands are not huge, and having a phone of this size just will not cut it for me. I will say though, the Optimus G Pro is looking quite good. Here are the specs:

  • 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon QPQ8064 processor

  • 5.5″ IPS LCD display

  • 3140mAh battery

  • 2GB of RAM

  • Android 4.1.2

Not too bad at all. I have played with the Optimus G, and I actually really liked it. Check out the video below from our friends over at Android Police. Let us know what you guys think of it.

Lumia 720 and 520 are Nokia's latest smartphones

Nokia's event at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is now over and the highlight is the announcement of the Lumia 720 and 520. Both devices pack a dual-core 1 GHz Snapdragon processor (Krait to be precise), run on Windows Phone 8 and share Nokia's many software advancements like Drive, Maps, software lenses, etc.

Nokia Lumia 720

The Lumia 720 sports a 4.3" ClearBlack display of WVGA (800 x 480) resolution with super sensitive touch, which works with gloves, nails, etc. The dual-core processor is coupled with 512 MB of RAM. There's NFC, the battery capacity is 2000 mAh, the phone is 9 mm thick and weighs 128g.
There are 8 gigs on on-board storage and there's a microSD card slot with up to 64 GB support. There's also the option to have wireless charging.
The camera on the back is a 6.7MP one with a bright f/1.9 aperture and Carl Zeiss optics.

The device comes in a plastic body - in a variety of colors and exchangeable panels - red, yellow, cyan, magenta, etc. The device will launch in Asia (TD-SCDMA version for China) and in select European countries this quarter for a price of €249 (around $330). Since it lacks LTE, is will most likely skip the US market.

Nokia Lumia 520

The Lumia 520 is the meeker of the two smartphones. It also packs a dual-core 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM but the display is a 4" WVGA IPS LCD with super sensitive touch. The camera on the back is 5 MP, which does 720p video capture.

LG MWC 2013: G, Vu, F and L series

Introduction

The LG staff must have been charged for excess baggage on its way to Barcelona – they've brought lots of new phones to MWC 2013. The LG Optimus G Pro uberphone leads the way, followed by the Vu II, but the company also fleshed out their F and L series, populated with low, mid and high-end smartphones.

The LG Optimus G Pro is not new – it was already announced for Korea, Japan and North America, but now it’s on the Old Continent too. The situation with the LG Optimus Vu II is similar.
Then there are the F series – LG’s new mass-market LTE-enabled phones that will capitalize on the expanding LTE market. The higher-end of the two, the LG Optimus F7, wasn't here so we only got to see its Optimus F5 sibling.
The L series are second generation devices and are more accessible price-wise. Also, all three models (L3 II, L5 II and L7 II) have dual-SIM options, which is a big deal for emerging markets.

Asus Padfone Infinity Specs Spotted

We all know that Asus has an updated version of its Padfone in the pipeline, and while we await with bated breath for the official Asus press conference to happen at MWC later today, here we are with a shot of Asus’ booth, showing off the unannounced Asus Padfone Infinity. Will it be as intuitive as depicted?
The Asus Padfone Infinity is touted to be able to keep up with the rest of the high end smartphones in the Android market, sporting a 5-inch Full HD display at 1080p resolution, LTE connectivity for uber-fast data speeds wherever you go, and of course, its raison d'etre, to be docked within a larger, 10.1-inch, 1080p tablet.

Tablet-ception, as some would call it, will see the Padfone Infinity carry a sleek aluminum alloy chassis that comes in brushed metal finish, with a speedy 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro as the processor of choice. Other than that, details remain as scarce as hair on detective Kojak’s head, so we will await with bated breath on what is to come as Asus holds their press conference later today.

Other than that, there was also a sign that depicted an Asus Fonepad, and information on this is far more scarce, although we do know that Taiwan-based Asus has promised phone capability, a HD display and a metallic finish.
The devil's in the details, and how we sorely miss our horned friend here!

Sunday February 24

Things have already kicked off with Samsung officially announcing the Galaxy Note 8.0 this morning.

As expected, it’s an 8-inch device with an S-Pen stylus and includes multi-screen functionality.

Power comes from a 1.6GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9-based Exynos processor and a 4,600mAh battery pack. Surprisingly it also has phone functionality with calls and texts.

Next in the line-up is Huawei’s big event which started at 2pm (1pm for those of you still in the UK) where the company announced its Ascend P2 Android flagship.

The Ascend P2 features a 4.7-inch 1280x720 pixel display with a pixel density of 316 pixels-per-inch (ppi), Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the company’s own Emotion UI on top, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB onboard storage and a 13-megapixel camera.

Monday starts at 8am with events scheduled by Sony and LG, with Nokia hosting its own conference at around 8.30am.

Sony is expected to showcase the Xperia Z smartphone and Xperia Tablet Z 10-inch slate, but it’s also hoped it will reveal details of the tablet’s availability outside of Japan.

Nokia might have a Windows tablet up its sleeve, or alternatively we could see some more Lumia smartphones.

Rumoured devices include the Lumia EOS PureView or Lumia ‘CatWalk’, both of which are believed to have aluminium bodyshells. Other possibilities include the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, which may be budget Windows Phone 8 models.

Alcatel is hosting a One Touch Pepcom Recovery Breakfast from 9am but we’ll be talking with the company more at 1pm. Huawei is hosting a booth tour from 10pm showcasing its latest kit, likely including the Ascend P2.

Qualcomm is hosting a keynote event at just after 11pm. We expect to find out what the company has planned for new processor capabilities in 2013 and 2014.

Asus will host a press conference from 2pm, followed by a product showcase at 3pm. We hope to see more of the newly launched Padfone 2 hybrid tablet and smartphone device.

It’s also possible we’ll see other tablet hardware from the company based on both Android and Microsoft’s Windows 8/Windows RT platforms.

ZTE will host its own event from 3.30pm in the afternoon where we hope to see more Android and Windows Phone devices as well as more info and hands-on time with the ZTE Mozilla phone.

From 12pm there will be a Samsung stand tour demonstrating the Korean manufacturer’s latest hardware, including the Galaxy Note 8.0.

At the same time we’ll also be checking out Motorola’s presence at the show and from 12.30pm we’ll be seeing more of Huawei.

Upcoming Nokia Asha phone design leaks

The Nokia event at the Mobile World Congress is about to kick off but before anything is officially announced we already have some pictures of a new Asha phone that is supposed to be announced today.

There is no information available about the device, including its name, other than this image. Only specs we can confirm from the image is a 5 megapixel rear facing camera and dual-SIM support. You can also see a transparent case for the device in some shots.

The phone has a new design that is a slight departure from previous Asha phones and is closer to the look of Nokia's Lumia phones. There is also a new dedicated back button below the display, which replaces the call and end keys on previous Asha phones.
The event is about to start and we should be finding out more about this device and the leaked Lumia 520 and 720 we saw before quite soon.

Android once again on top of iOS in the US

According to Kantar Worldpanel, for the three month period ending in January of this year, Google's OS has once again taken the top spot of smartphone sales in the United States with a 50.6% market share. Apple was recently king of the hill thanks to strong sales of its new iPhone 5, but Android has been able to make its way back due to competitive carrier discounts.

Sprint's cut ofо the on-contract price of the Galaxy S III to $99 helped spur the strong Android sales, where some 39% of all Sprint devices sold were the S III.
Average price-per-OS also plays a factor. In the three month period ending October 2012, both iOS and Android devices saw similar average costs per unit at $130 and $127, respectively. This most recent period, however, saw a significant drop for Android to $95, while iOS went up to $146 per unit.
As far as the carrier shootout goes, Verizon has taken over the first spot from AT&T with a 2.2% increase from last year, while T-Mobile and the other smaller providers have seen increasing market share as well.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Unveiling At New York City

It seems that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is all set for an unveiling at New York City this coming March 14, bringing the global fight for market supremacy where the smartphone is concerned to Apple’s home turf, after Samsung was said to have been flooded by requests from U.S. mobile carriers for the South Korean consumer electronics giant to do so.
The smartphone market has seen bitter wars fought between Samsung and Apple, both in the courts of law across different continents, and outside of courts as well in the marketplace, with no one pulling ahead home and clear. The introduction of the Galaxy S4 in the US will certainly breathe new life into the smartphone wars, and this alleged March 14th is said to be special as it marks the first time Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone will roll out in the US in three years.

Samsung Mobile division chief J.K. Shin said, “We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year, and this time we changed the venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country." Is that an underlined jab at Apple, that mobile carriers already prefer Samsung over Apple?

So far, leaked benchmarks as well as rumored specifications of the alleged Samsung Galaxy S4 have appeared, where whispers abound of the Galaxy S4 running on a Full High Definition display, sport a superior camera over its predecessor, in addition to a blazing fast quad-core processor.  Are you waiting in anticipation for the Galaxy S4?

Samsung to announce Galaxy S IV on March 14

Samsung has announced they they will be unveiling the next generation Galaxy S smartphone, colloquially dubbed the Galaxy S IV, on March 14, proving some of the rumors we have been hearing right.

The event is said to take place in New York City, unlike the Galaxy S III launch event which happened in London, and will be the first US launch event for Samsung in three years. Samsung says they were "bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country", hence the change of venue this year.
As for the phone itself, we are still dealing with rumors that suggest a 4.99-inch 1080p display, quad-core Qualcomm processor and a 13 megapixel camera. We'll see how much of this comes to be true in a couple of weeks from now.

How to Save Ink and Make Web Sites Print Better

web_printing_top
Printing out web pages you want a hard copy of can be a little hit and miss. Unlike other documents, it is not easy to tell exactly how many pieces of paper will be needed, and whether or not there will be any awkward clipping. Add to this the problem of wasting ink by printing out unwanted images and ads, and it is little wonder that many people resort to copying and pasting into a word processor. But by using browser add-ons and bookmarklets, you can gain control over what you are printing.
There’s nothing to stop you from using the Print Preview option of your browser, but if you find that you’re going to end up printing out an extra page of ink-heavy paper because of a banner ad, there’s not much you can do about it. By turning to one of the following tools, you gain the ability to edit pages before you print them.
This not only means that you only print out what you are interested in so there are no unnecessary distractions, but also that you can save ink, paper and money in the process. It does not matter which web browser is your weapon of choice, there is a solution for you out there.

Chrome – Print Friendly

If Chrome is your browser of choice Print Friendly could be the addon for you. Printing is immediately made easier thanks to the fact that a toolbar button is added so you no longer have to navigate through Chrome’s menu.
There are a few ways in which you can improve web page printing. A quick and easy way to save paper and ink is to tick the Remove Image button, but you can also use the Text Size drop down menu to cram more onto each page.
In the print preview window, you can click on any page element to remove it – so you can easily cut out advertisements and boxes you don’t want. As soon as you hit the print button the usual print dialog will spring into action so you can choose to print at a lower quality to save even more ink.

Firefox – Print Edit

Print Edit is another addon that can be accessed through a toolbar button – although, oddly, this is a multi-function button that defaults to regular printing. Click the arrow to the right of the button and select Print Edit to get to work.
You’ll find that the addon does a great job of stripping out unnecessary content without you having to do anything. An algorithm is used to identify navigation bars, banners and advertisements that should be removed, but you are then free to start editing the remaining content.
