Huawei sales in India still strong despite uncertain future

While some carriers and retailers in Europe are reevaluating their relationship with Huawei following its US ban, which made the future of its smartphone business uncertain, sales in India are going as usual with indications of change in the near future. Croma, one of the leading retail giants in India, stated that Huawei users aren't particularly worried about incoming updates and are confident they will be getting new software features pretty soon. Ritesh Ghosal, the Chief Marketing Officer at Croma, said that "with its innovative and differentiated technology offerings, Huawei...

A couple of leaks from multiple sources have revealed details about the Huawei nova 5i. Some suggest that this will launch as the Huawei P20 lite (2019) in some regions, however, several of the rumored specs don't line up. The nova 5i was certified by Taiwan's NCC with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage, plus up to 512GB extra with a microSD card. There will be a version will 64GB storage as well. The phone has passed through Geekbench as well, showing a Kirin 710-level score. Huawei may announce the Kirin 720 any moment now and we thought a nova phone will introduce it, but that doesn't...

Our Asus Zenfone 6 video review is up

Asus is far from a major player in the smartphone industry. As far as the wider tech world is concerned, however, the Taiwanese company is a behemoth, with its expertise in computer hardware earning it many fans. That position seems to be key in understanding the occasional Asus dabble in the phone world. Historically, Asus handsets tend to be different than the mainstream. The company's PC pedigree shines through, be it through the use Intel mobile chipsets when that was a thing, convoluted PC-style model numbering or bold design and functional decisions all around, like on the ROG...

Huawei P30 and P30 Pro update enables DC dimming

DC dimming is being enabled on the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro via a software update that is currently rolling out in China. This means that Huawei's flagships have joined the growing number of phones with OLED screens that ditched PWM for DC dimming. What's the difference? In short, PWM rapidly turns the pixels on and off to lower the brightness - hence the name "pulse width modulation". This leads to a flicker that some people are sensitive to and causes headaches for them. DC dimming reduces the current sent to each pixel, which reduces its brightness while keeping it on constantly (so,...

Motorola debuts Moto Z4 with better camera, bigger battery

Motorola on Thursday introduced the Moto Z4 smartphone, the latest in its line of handsets with modular capabilities. The Moto Z4 not only improves the camera performance and battery life over its predecessors, but it also manages to sneak in a bigger screen and a few other goodies.

The Motorola Moto Z4 will be offered in two versions: one that is unlocked for all carriers and for Verizon customers. The unlocked model retails for $500 and will be sold through a variety of outlets starting from June 6. Verizon’s edition will be just $240 for new activations starting a week later, on June 13.

Powered by Android 9 Pie, the Moto Z4 employs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor with 4GB and houses some 128GB storage capacity. A microSD card slot allows for up to 2TB of external media.

OPINION: Motorola needs a true flagship

Motorola dialed things up a notch in more than one area, each of which should please consumers. The screen moves up to 6.4-inches, the largest in the Z series yet, and provides an 85% screen-to-body ratio.

Battery is a key area for buyers and Motorola delivers here as it inserts a 3,600mAh power source. It, too, is the biggest battery to date for the Z family of phones. The included 15W charger will replenish things in no time at all.

The rear camera has a “48-megapixel” sensor that uses pixel binning to create high-quality 12-megapixel shots. Around front is a “25-megapixel” camera which uses the same technology to produce great 6.2-megapixel photos.

The main camera boasts an f/1.7 aperture, optical image stabilization, and laser focusing. The camera app itself packs a new Night Vision mode, as well as portrait mode, motion photos, Google Lens, RAW mode, and auto HDR.

Back in action for the Moto Z4 is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a feature that was removed after the Moto Z2 Play. Other details include a fingerprint reader built into the display, NFC, and USB-C 3.1.

This is a Moto Z phone after all so that means it’s compatible with the current ecosystem of Moto Mods modular devices. These accessories, which extend the capabilities and enhance the experience, include extra battery, speakers, cameras, and even a 5G radio.

Availability

The unlocked version of the Moto Z4 is available for pre-order starting immediately, with shipping expected on June 6. Look for it at places like Best Buy, B&H Photo, and Amazon in a $500 bundle that includes the 360º camera Moto Mod.

Verizon customers who sign up for a new line of service can purchase it for just $240. The 5G Moto Mod is $200 which means subscribers can pick up both for just $440.

As for colors, the Moto Z4 will be initially sold in Flash Grey with a Frost White arriving later this summer.

For a limited time, Verizon is offering 5G service at no additional cost for the Moto z4 (for customers on Above Unlimited and Beyond Unlimited plans.)

Samsung Galaxy Note10e rumored to have a 3,400 mAh battery

We've seen rumors that Samsung's upcoming Note10 line will feature at least two variants with a smaller SM-N970 and larger SM-N975. Last month a similar discovery found the Note10 Pro's battery to be a 4,500 mAh cell, which would be an upgrade over the Note9's 4,000 mAh battery. Previous reports suggest the smaller Galaxy...

Update on Project Strobe: New policies for Chrome and Drive

Third-party apps and websites create services that millions of people use to get things done and customize their online experience. To make this ecosystem successful, people need to be confident their data is secure, and developers need clear rules of the road. That’s why last year we announced Project Strobe, a root-and-branch review of third-party developer access to your Google account and Android device data.

As a result of our review, we implemented new policies across Gmail and Android to better protect your data. For example, with changes to SMS and Call Log permissions for Android apps, the number of apps with access to this sensitive information has decreased by more than 98 percent. These apps are still able to deliver core services to people just by switching to permissions that access less sensitive data, or by eliminating minor functionality in their apps.

Today, we’re announcing additional changes as a result of Project Strobe, including new policies for Chrome extensions and the Drive API. Here’s what’s new:

Trustworthy Chrome Extensions

There are more than 180,000 extensions in the Chrome Web Store, and nearly half of all Chrome desktop users actively use extensions to customize Chrome and their experience on the web—helping them keep track of to-dos or find shopping deals online. This ability to improve and personalize online experiences depends on a vibrant community of Chrome browser developers.

Last October, we shared our intention to ensure that all Chrome extensions are trustworthy by default. Today, as part of Project Strobe, we’re continuing that effort with additional Chrome Web Store policies. Specifically:

  1. We’re requiring extensions to only request access to the appropriate data needed to implement their features. If there is more than one permission that could be used to implement a feature, developers must use the permission with access to the least amount of data. While this has always been encouraged of developers, now we’re making this a requirement for all extensions.

  2. We’re requiring more extensions to post privacy policies, including extensions that handle personal communications and user-provided content. Our policies have previously required any extension that handles personal and sensitive user data to post a privacy policy and handle that data securely. Now, we’re expanding this category to include extensions that handle user-provided content and personal communications. Of course, extensions must continue to be transparent in how they handle user data, disclosing the collection, use and sharing of that data.

We’re announcing these changes in advance of the official policy rollout this summer to give developers the time needed to ensure their extensions will be in compliance. Developers can learn more about these changes in our FAQ.

Tightening the Drive API

Last fall we updated our user data policy to provide additional guidelines and restrictions for apps seeking to access your Gmail data. Today we’re announcing plans to extend the same policy to Google Drive, which will give you more control over what data third-party apps can access in Drive.

When you connect third-party apps, Drive gives you one central place to keep all your files and helps you easily collaborate with others. With this updated policy, we’ll limit apps that use Google Drive APIs from broadly accessing content or data in Drive. This means we’ll restrict third-party access to specific files and be verifying public apps that require broader access, such as backup services.

These changes will go into effect early next year. Visit the Cloud blog for more details.

Our top priority is to protect user data and keep it safe, while continuing to enable developers to build features that people want and need. As we continue the work of Project Strobe, we’ll also work with our developer partners to give them appropriate time to adjust and update their apps and services.

Why data speeds are slower on MVNO networks

An MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operator is a company that leases access to towers from one of the big four carriers. In the U.S., those carriers include AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon.

Popular MVNOs for the big four include Cricket (AT&T), Virgin Mobile (Sprint), Metro (T-Mobile), and Xfinity Mobile (Verizon). In some cases the MVNO may even be owned by the original network, such is the case with Cricket or Metro.

There are many more MVNOs out there besides those I just mentioned, many of which you may not know. MVNOs tend to lack the big marketing budgets of the main carriers, but that’s one of the reasons MVNOs are able to save you money over the traditional carriers.

Although these operators use the same towers and general infrastructure of the big names it’s not always the same experience. Or, to be more specific, the coverage might be there but the speeds may not.

Why is data slower from an MVNO?

The simple answer is, the four major carriers prioritize customers who pay for postpaid plans. In fact, last year it was reported that MVNOs can be up to 23% slower than the original network.

The findings came after an independent research company named Tutela analyzed 240 billion network measurements from 2.8 million handsets across the U.S.

It shouldn’t be too surprising that the users paying the most also receive the highest priority, even prepaid customers can have their speeds throttled when the network is congested.

Not all MVNOs are created equal.

While Tutela’s data showed that MVNO networks were slower across the board, it also found that some were better than others. For example, MVNOs on the T-Mobile and Sprint networks had the smallest drop off in speeds, in most cases speeds were often within 1Mbps of the original carrier.

AT&T, on the other hand, had speeds that were between 4 and 10Mbps slower from its MVNO partners. While Verizon was the worst of the offenders, showing speeds nearly half as fast as the 24Mbps it offers to its own customers.

It’s worth noting, however, that even with speeds half as fast, Xfinity Mobile customers are still seeing faster downloads on average when compared to many other MVNOs.

Does that mean you shouldn’t use an MVNO?

Despite having a slower maximum download speed, MVNOs still provide a speedy service at an affordable price.

With the exception of downloading large files, most users won’t notice a difference in speed. You’ll still be able to surf the web, stream videos and music, and save some money while you do it.

Motorola One Action does Geekbench with Exynos 9609 chipset

Back in April, @evleaks tweeted that Motorola is working on four "One" phones and with the release of the One Vision, three of them are a reality. The fourth one has just passed through Geekbench. The Motorola One Action is powered by a Samsung-made Exynos 9609 chipset, just like the One Vision. This is just a lower clocked version of the 9610 chip - 2.2 + 1.6GHz instead of 2.3 + 1.7GHz. Here's a quick comparison with the Galaxy A50, though note that it was a pre-release One Action that ran the test. Even so and despite the 0.1GHz difference in clocks, the scores are very close. ...

Daily News Roundup: Intel Wants Laptops to Know You’re Near

Intel doesn’t make laptops. But in the past, it has occasionally used its power to guide laptop trajectory. If you remember Ultrabooks, that was an Intel drive to steer the future of premium laptops.

Now Intel is introducing Project Athena, only this time the focus isn’t premium laptops so much as long-lasting laptops. A Project Athena laptop (a branding name is coming later) should have nine hours of battery life. And if you’re thinking plenty of laptops reach that benchmark now, those are tested under ideal conditions. Typically a video playing with the screen brightness turned very low. Intel wants to test laptops with something closer to real-world conditions.

The company knows just saying, “make it laster longer” isn’t all that helpful, so Intel is also introducing a proposed feature to help reach that goal: presence detection. On prototype laptops, Intel showed a proximity sensor embedded next to the webcam. When you step away, the proximity sensor notices you aren’t near anymore and puts the device to sleep. When you come back, the laptop sees you and wakes up to the login screen. It’s pretty close to the method many smartphones use now.

As an alternative, Intel is also testing using a camera and facial recognition. The idea isn’t to save specific faces, at least not yet, but to recognize that some face is present and use that information to wake up the device or put it asleep. Unfortunately, in demonstrations, the tech was far too sensitive, and the Intel rep had to point the camera at the ceiling for the laptop to go to sleep. Plenty of fine-tuning is needed. And naturally, privacy implications with facial recognition technology will need to be addressed.

But I think we can all agree that laptop battery life that lasts longer would be a good thing. [Engadget]

In Other News:

  • Google sticks to its guns on ad blocking: We previously detailed out Google’s plans to make changes in how ad blocking works, and there was naturally some negative feedback. Google says it’s going to push forward with its plans, while allowing enterprise users to access the old scheme, for in-house purposes. [9to5Google]

  • You can have an official Pokemon themed wedding if that’s your thing: Because of course you can, official Pokemon themed weddings are now a thing in Japan. Or if it’s OK to capture any of the Pokemon present. [Kotaku]
  • Checker’s payment system got hacked, leading to credit card theft: Checker’s (or Rally’s depending on your location) is one of the larger fast-food restaurant chains in the U.S. Unfortunately, over 100 of the company’s restaurants had malware installed on its POS systems between 2017 and 2019. The malware stole credit card numbers, cardholder names, pin data, and more. If you’ve eaten at a Checker’s or Rally’s you should check if your local restaurant is in the list, and then call your bank. [ZDNet]
  • 70% of Hulu subscribers are on the ad-supported tier: Unlike Netflix, Hulu comes in both an ad-free and an ad-supported tier. You might think going without ads would be the more popular choice, but the ad-supported tier is nearly half the cost. According to the company, 70% of its subscribers choose the cheaper option. That’s just fine with the company, it’s making so much from ads it recently lowered the price of that tier. [Variety]
  • Google Play Store now requires app developers to disclose loot box odds: Loot boxes are controversial, and done wrong can ruin a game. The biggest issue stemming from the practice is the promise of a fantastic item and not having any idea how likely it is to win. If you can only get cool red shaded thingamajig .01% of the time, it’s practically a rip-off and lie. Now Google requires game makers to disclose those odds so you can make an informed decision before parting with your hard-earned dollars. That’s a good thing. [The Verge]
  • Microsoft announces Game Pass for PCs: Speaking of games, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass to PCs. Details are scarce (like pricing, what games, etc.) but the company promises over 100 games from 75 developers to start. That means it won’t be limited to Microsoft backed games like Forza. If the pricing is right, could be worth looking at. [The Verge]
  • Wyze Cameras now work with Google Assitant: Wyze Cams are exceptional, especially for the price. One feature they lacked with Google integration, but that’s no longer an issue. Starting now, you can use voice commands to start a recording or turn your camera on (but not off). And if you have a Google Home hub, you can watch a video feed. Right now, the feed has high latency, though, so it’s not perfect. Call it a good start. [Wyze]

Astronomers discovered a Neptune-like planet (designated NGTS-4b) about 920 light-years from Earth. Neptune-like planets aren’t necessarily unusual themselves, but this one is special. You see, it’s incredibly close to its star.

How close? Well, a single orbit around its star (what we call a year) takes less than two days. For comparison, Mercury, the closest planet to our Sun, takes just over 89 days to complete an orbit.

Usually, only small rocky planets (like Mercury) or massive and hot planets (like Jupiter) exist so close to a star. This is the first time astronomers have spotted a Neptune-planet so close to its star, and the discovery led to a new designation: a Neptune-desert.

How to Change a Microsoft Word Document to a CSV File

word logo

A Comma Separated Value (CSV) contains data separated by commas (and sometimes other characters) and is generally used to exchange data from one application to another. If you have a list of data in a Word document, converting it to a CSV file can help you get it into other apps.

Let’s say you’ve been keeping all of your email contacts organized in a Word file and you’d like to let an online application clean it up for you. You’re likely going to need a CSV file to achieve this. In fact, several of these applications you’d find online may only support CSV files because the file works across the Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms. Pretty efficient.

Go ahead and open the Word file that contains the data to be imported. In this example, we’re going to be showing a very small email list.

small email list

As you can see, all of our data is separated by commas and are on separate lines, similar to the row/column structure you’d find in Excel. The structure of a CSV file can get a bit complicated, but this is a very basic example.

Once you’re ready, click the “File” tab located at the top-left of the window.

In the pane on the left-hand side, select “Save As.”
