How to Permanently Erase Data Off a Hard Drive

Permanently Erase Data Off a Hard Drive
So you want to make sure that someone can't get their hands on your private files on a hard drive. Here are ways to render your data completely unreadable.
When files are deleted from a computer by emptying the Recycle Bin or Trash (or by reformatting), the operating system removes them from the list of files on the hard drive. However, the actual contents of the files remain on the drive until it is overwritten, either by use of the same space on the drive or by intentional data destruction. Data that has not been overwritten can easily be recovered with a few tools and a little know-how. This article covers methods of deleting data in such a way that the data becomes unrecoverable by anyone.

Steps

Boot and Nuke Method

This will allow reuse of your hard drive, but theoretically your data is still recoverable by forensic analysis by well-financed governments. Lifehacker describes the software that you will be using, Darik's Boot and Nuke, as "an open-source boot disk utility (read: works on nearly any computer) that supports a wide variety of disk wiping methods and operates from inside the computer's RAM, allowing it to scrub the disk thoroughly at a remove."[1]

Permanently request desktop sites on Firefox for Android

Firefox for Android can request desktop sites, but you have to request it every time. We'll show you how to set it for desktop sites, once and for all

Step 1:
In the Firefox address bar, type "about:config" and press Enter.Firefox for Android can request desktop versions of sites, but you have to make the request every time you visit a site that loads a mobile version. You can use Firefox add-ons to change the browser user agent string, but if you don't want to install add-ons, you can make the change directly to Firefox. Here's how:
Step 2: Tap the "Add a New Setting" button, then select "String" as the type.

Step 3: For name, enter "general.useragent.override."

Step 4: For value, enter the browser user agent string you want to use. You can do a Google search for the user agent strings of your preferred browser and OS. In this example, we're using the user agent string for the desktop version of Firefox 17 on Windows 7.

Step 5: Restart Firefox and confirm that Web sites are loading the desktop versions.
That's it. If you want to change the user agent later, go back to about:config and search for "general.useragent.override." Hit the Modify button to change the user agent or the Reset button to remove it.

13 killer Chrome apps to replace your desktop software

When Tim Berners-Lee invented the first Web browser in 1990, it was just an application made to read HTML pages passively. Fast-forward to today, and the modern Web browser has become a powerful platform in itself—almost a miniature operating system, capable of running complex JavaScript code and interacting with Flash plug-ins.
Indeed, Web pages have evolved into Web apps, to the point where we can do much of our productivity work in a browser window without ever having to invest in traditional desktop software.
But how much work can you really do from a browser? Could you replace all of your desktop apps with Chrome extensions, and be none the worse for wear? After testing a bunch of Chrome apps, I found mixed results: Web apps simply aren’t designed to be complete replicas of their desktop counterparts. Although these apps have gotten a lot better in the past couple of years, you might encounter a few peccadilloes, and desktop software may still be the better choice for your unique needs.
That said, if you haven't been keeping a close watch on the growing power of Chrome extensions and Web apps, you might be pleasantly surprised by our top alternatives to popular desktop software.

Word processing: Google Drive Documents

No matter what you do for a living, you've probably spent some time using a word processor in the past week, probably even in the past 24 hours. Unless you're doing some very complicated work, you could ditch your word processor for Google Drive right now without missing a beat. Sure, the interface is different: You'll find no Ribbon of commands and functions at the top of the screen, and you'll see far fewer buttons. But Google Drive's Documents let you do all of the important things, such as format text, create titles and lists, embed images into your documents, and more.
With its powerful collaboration features, Google Docs is ideal for working on documents with friends and colleagues.
If you often find yourself emailing Word files back and forth, Google Drive might be even better than its desktop counterparts: You can just invite another person to view your document, and you can both edit the document at the same time, watching each other’s cursors at work. Add Skype to the mix, and it's just like working in the same room, even if the other person is a continent away.
