Where To Find The Best Wallpapers For Your Smartphone

Michael Grothaus 28/02/2018 - 4:12pm

These are the best places to personalize your mobiles.

I remember when the iPhone first came out you weren’t able to personalize its background wallpaper–you were stuck with the default black background. Matter of fact, one of the distinguishing features of the first Android smartphones was the ability to set a custom wallpaper. Thankfully, Apple changed their stance on the matter and nowadays any smartphone you buy can be customized with any background you want. Many times we’ll use our own photos as our backgrounds, but that’s only one option. A whole host of apps and websites have sprung up that allow you to download beautiful wallpaper backgrounds. These are our favorites.

Kappboom

This is a terrific app for Android and iOS. It features over 200,000 wallpapers across a myriad variety of categories including Anime, Cars, Games, Movies, Music and more. The iOS version of the app now also supports iMessage stickers while the Android version of the app even includes support for Android Wear. And not only can you search by categories, you can search by colors and tags–making finding the perfect wallpaper you want easy.

Backgrounds

Another great Android app is Backgrounds (HD Wallpapers). This app has a great layout and features not only HD wallpapers, but live wallpapers as well. Categories include Nature, Cool, Abstract, Love, Design, Pets & Animals, Entertainment, Festivals and more. You can also search by tags, popularity, and themes.

Android Wallpapers

This website doesn’t offer as many wallpapers as some apps, but the quality of the wallpapers it top notch. Currently, they have a collection of 2158 free high-quality Android wallpapers. Categories include Abstract, Cartoons, Celebs, Logos, and more.

The Matrixer

This is a niche site. It’s so niche, they only have 81 wallpapers, but they are beautiful in their design. All wallpapers are 1080 x 1920 so they will look crisp on almost all modern smartphones.

Reddit

Another great place to find smartphone wallpapers online is Reddit. There’s a great subreddit called reddit.com/r/MobileWallpaper/ where people post their favorite finds. This subreddit isn’t only good for finding gems, but for helping you identify which artist or site a wallpaper you’ve come across has come from.

iPhoneWalls

Another great site that bills itself for iPhone wallpapers. The site has over 5000 beautiful high-quality wallpapers. It should be noted that though many wallpaper sites bill themselves as for Android or iPhone, a wallpaper is a wallpaper–aka: just an image file. And any image file can be set as the wallpaper on any smartphone regardless of the brand.

Google Images

A fantastic site to find wallpapers for your smartphone is Google Images. Simply go to https://images.google.com and Google “smartphone wallpapers” and you’ll find a virtually unlimited number of them formatted for your smartphone screen. Try more advanced searches to narrow down the type of wallpaper you want, such as “Black Panther wallpaper”. Then just download the image to your phone and use the walloper settings to set that image as the default wallpaper.

Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ VS Samsung Galaxy S8 & Galaxy S8+: What's The Difference?

Paul Briden 28/02/2018 - 3:14pm

How does the new Galaxy S9 series improve on the Galaxy S8 series from 2017?

You may have heard; Samsung has now launched the Galaxy S9 series at one of its "Unpacked" branded events at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The new flagship generation for 2018 has some nifty new specs and features, though it isn't very different from the last gen on the outside. All of that pretty much fits with the pre-launch rumour trail, however.

Naturally, people are going to be wondering just how 2017's Galaxy S8 series compares to the brand spanking new model, and, thankfully making our lives a heck of a lot easier, Samsung itself has published this rather handy infographic pitching the new kit against its predecessor spec-for-spec.

Right, so let's break that down a bit shall we?

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ vs Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+: Design & Display

As you can see from Samsung's illustration at the top there, the design and display aspects are where things have changed least from the last-gen. Sure, looking at the dimensions, Samsung has tweaked things a little, but only by mere millimetres; allegedly the size of the screen bezels has also changed, but as with the bodywork generally, it's by such miniscule measurements that unless you whip out some calipers you're not going to notice. Don't let that image with the Galaxy S9 having a picture with a black background fool you about the display size either.

All four models use the same IP68 water and dust resistance.

The biggest change is on the rear panel. Samsung got a lot of flak for putting the Galaxy S8 fingerprint scanner adjacent to the camera sensor rather than below it. With the Galaxy S9, it has fixed this and placed the scanner centrally, making it easier to use all round.

You can also see that the display sizes and specs have not changed one iota from the Galaxy S8 series. Samsung alleges it has improved black depth and contrast on the Galaxy S9 series, but until we see it in person we can't verify if it's noteworthy or not.

Assuming there's either no change, or simply not much, however, it isn't really a negative in our view as Samsung already far and away leads the pack on display technology, and it's hard in many respects to see what they can improve.

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ vs Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+: Camera

This is the biggest advancement for the new models, and also the area where not only does the Galaxy S9 series as a whole differ from the Galaxy S8 series, but also where the Galaxy S9+ distinguishes itself from the regular-sized Galaxy S9. Having said that, all four models from both ranges have 12MP sensors for the primary camera, and 8MP for the secondary. But drilling down into the details is where things start to add up.

To start with, both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are offering a world first for phone cameras with a variable aperture; users can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 for the primary camera, giving you much finer control over image quality. The f/1.5 peak aperture setting is a wider setup than the Galaxy S8 series f/1.7 setup, so should improve image quality noticably; not that f/1.7 is anything to sneeze, however. On both the Galaxy S8 series and Galaxy S9 series, the whole package comes with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and excellent dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus for rapid, sharp capture with minimal noise.

The Galaxy S9+ adds a second 12MP f/2.4 aperture sensor to the primary array for a dual-sensor setup, with OIS and dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus for both lenses. It retains the variable aperture on the main wide-angle lens, while the second sensor has a fixed aperture but is a telephoto lens.

All the phones use the same 8MP f/1.7 front-facing selfie camera with autofocus - AF still being a relative rarity on selfie cams, despite its obvious benefits.

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ vs Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+: Hardware

Naturally, with a new generation comes a new processor suite.

As usual with Samsung, what you get inside the engine bay is dependent on region. The "International" variants of both the Galaxy S8 models and both the Galaxy S9 models are based on Samsung's own Exynos processors. North America (US & Canada) and China get a slightly different take with Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs.

For the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ that's the Exynos 8895 CPU with a Mali-G71 MP20 GPU for the International model, or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 MSM8998 with an Adreno 540 GPU for the North American & Chinese models.

With the Galaxy S9 series, we're updated to the Exynos 9810 with a Mali-G72 MP18 GPU, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 MSM8998  with an Adreno 630 GPU, for the respective regions.

Both last-gen and new-gen for both the Exynos and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips are 64-bit and based on 10nm semiconductor architecture, however, the newer phase is known as 10nm LPP (Low Power Plus) and has both performance and power effiency improvements. As you can see from the infographic, both newer chips also have increased clock-speeds on their core clusters too.

With RAM things get a bit more interesting. ALL of the Galaxy S8 models run 4GB of RAM, and so does the Galaxy S9, however, the Galaxy S9+ has 6GB of RAM to play with, which should give a noticable boost regardless of which CPU it is running.

On internal storage, the Galaxy S8 series only came in one flavour; 64GB, with support for microSD cards up to 256GB. On the Galaxy S9 series, both models come with microSD support up to 400GB and come in 64GB and 128GB internal storage models. There is also a 256GB internal storage model, but it is limited by region for availability, and we are not expecting it to show its face in Europe/UK.

While the Galaxy S8 series has both an iris scanner and face scanner (as well as the fingerprint scanner), the Galaxy S9 series has all this but adds something called Intelligent Scan, which is designed to combine biometric data from face and iris scanning simultaneously for a more accurate and more secure setup.

Both Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 series' have exactly the same battery setup, with 3,000mAh cells for the regular models, and 3,500mAh on the Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy S9+. All are non-removable.

Lastly, the Galaxy S9 series has an advantage for audiophiles, with both its headphones and stereo speakers being tuned by AKG audio, and supporting Dolby Atmos surround sound.

How To Make Your iPhone X Display Even Better

Michael Grothaus 28/02/2018 - 3:10pm

Tweak it with these hacks.

It’s probably accurate to say the iPhone X’s display is the most decisive in smartphone history. The 5.8in features a Super Renita HD AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2436×1125 pixels and a pixel-per-inch density of 458. On top of that, the display is made of dual-ion exchange-strengthened glass and is 3D Touch enabled. I know, what’s so divisive about that? It’s because that beautiful screen has the infamous notch–some people love it and some hate it.

I was in the latter group, but after using the iPhone X for a while I’ve learned to embrace the notch. It adds a level of distinction to the iPhone. And besides, notch or not, the iPhone X’s display is drop-dead gorgeous. But, did you know you can make the display even better? It’s true. Here are the hacks you can take advantage of that will help tailor the iPhone X’s display to your optimal liking.

iPhone X Display: Text Size And Bold Text

Sometimes the iPhone screen looks perfect from a color and brightness point of view–it’s just the text that could be hard to read for certain people. And by “certain people” I mean long-sighted people. But Apple has built in two settings that can make it easier to read text for such people: Text Size and Bold Text. Text Size allows you to make default system text and text in apps larger or smaller. Bold Text will make the same next bold, making it easier on the eyes. To adjust either go to Settings > Display & Brightness and then toggle the Bold Text tab to ON (green) or tap Text Size and adjust the text slider at the bottom of the next page.

iPhone X Display: True Tone

True Tone is a feature on the iPhone X that dynamically adjusts the white balance of the iPhone's display based on your current lighting conditions. This results in the color of your screen looking more natural and accurate – kind of like paper does. I love True Tone, but some people might not. You can see what your screen looks like by turning it off. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness and then toggle the True Ton switch to OFF (white).

iPhone X Display: Night Shift

Night Shift is a setting that, after a certain time of night, will automatically make your iPhone’s screen look warmer. It does this by reducing the blue light the display emits. Science says blue light wires our brain to keep us up, which is why Night Shift is set to come on automatically on most phones after 10pm. If you don’t like this warming on your display each night, you can turn it off or change the time settings. Simply go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift to do so.

iPhone X Display: Reduce The White Point

People like bright displays, but really bright displays can make certain bright colors hard on the eyes. Thankfully there's a setting in iOS that allows you to keep the display brightness the same, but reduce the brightness of other colors. This is the Reduce White Point setting. You can enable it in Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations under the Reduce White Point header.

iPhone X Display: Auto-brightness

Finally, if you find your iPhone’s screen fluctuating in brightness you probably have auto-brightness enabled. This will make the screen brighter in bright outside conditions (thus making it easier to read) and darker in low light conditions (because it doesn’t need as much brightness to be visible). You can toggle Auto-brightness on or off by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

Clearly, this didn't happen and there were no new Huawei phones either (the P10 was another MWC 2017 announcement). LG's official announcements at MWC this year were admittedly a bit light on the hardware front, with a major focus on AI instead.

Sony Xperia XZ2

Sony Xperia XZ2
