Optoma UHL55 Android projector review: There's no point

We've reviewed a few Android-based portable projectors in the past, like Anker's Nebula Capsule and the AAXA P2-A. The Optoma UHL55 is something else entirely. It's still a projector, and it still runs Android, but it's closer to something you would find in a high-end home theater.

Forget about the 720p resolutions and low brightness of other portable projectors — the UHL55 is 4K with a brightness of 1,500 lumens.

How To Use The iPhone’s Group FaceTime Calling Feature

Michael Grothaus 31/10/2018 - 2:18pm

You can now video call up to 32 people at once.

Apple released iOS 12.1 this week and the biggest new feature in it is Group FaceTime. Apple actually announced Group FaceTime back in June and had planned to ship it with iOS 12 in September, but they held the feature back to make improvements.

But now with the arrival of iOS 12.1 users can now make Group FaceTime audio and video calls with up to a staggering 32 people. Group FaceTime also features cool features like automatic detection of active speakers, ringless notifications, and of course are encrypted end to end so they remain private and viewable only by the participants. All it’s features in detail:

  • Automatic detection of active speakers: FaceTime uses on-device intelligence to display the most prominent speakers on the call, automatically highlighting the current speaker by bringing them to the forefront. It automatically sizes each person’s image depending upon how active they are in the conversation, based on duration of speech, volume and even motion. Participants who are not active will appear at the bottom of the screen until they speak. A simple tap also brings a participant front and centre.
  • Ringless notification: When calling more than one person, FaceTime displays a notification that lets you instantly join a call without being disruptive.
  • Messages integration: Group FaceTime is integrated into the Messages app, making it easy to start a Group FaceTime right from a group iMessage chat. If people in a conversation have already started a FaceTime session, Messages shows the active call in the conversation list and inside your conversations.
  • Private: All FaceTime conversations, both one-to-one and multi-person, are encrypted end to end so they remain private and viewable only by the participants.

So just how do you use Group FaceTime? We’re glad you asked!

Group FaceTime: Make A Call From The FaceTime App

  1. Open the FaceTime app.
  2. Tap the + button in the top-right corner.
  3. Enter the name of your contacts, their phone numbers, or their emails of the people you want to Group Call.
  4. To start your FaceTime call, tap the Audio or Video buttons.

Group FaceTime: Make A Call From The Messages App

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Start a new group conversation or go to an existing group conversation.
  3. Tap the contacts at the top of the group conversation.
  4. Tap the FaceTime (camera icon) button, then start your call.

Group FaceTime: Join A Call

There are several ways you can join a Group FaceTime call:

  • Tap the notification you receive in the Notification Center or on the Lock screen, then tap the green FaceTime camera button.
  • To join a Group FaceTime call from Messages, tap the notification at the top of your screen or tap the green “Join” button inside the message you receive. After you tap Join, you're automatically connected to the group call.
  • To join a group call from the FaceTime app, just go to the active call in FaceTime, then tap the green FaceTime camera button.

Group FaceTime: Adding Another Person To An Active Call

  1. On the call screen, tap the + button.
  2. Tap Add Person.
  3. Enter the person’s name, phone number, or email.
  4. Tap Add Person to FaceTime.

The Best Note-Taking Apps for Android

It happens to the best of us: you’re out and about, and suddenly you think of something you need to do at home. Or, you’re looking at your pantry, and want to make sure you get the right groceries for the week. Out comes your phone and your note-taking app of choice. But which app is the best for you?

Google Keep

Google Keep is my personal favorite since I use the rest of Google’s services—but even if you’re not all-in on Google’s ecosystem, it’s worth taking a look at Keep.

Keep syncs all your notes to your Google account, so you know it’s backed up. You can read your notes on any device with the Google Keep app (iOS, Android, or Chrome extension) or by visiting the Google Keep web-page.

Keep lets you color code your notes, pin important stuff to the top of your list, and archive notes that you don’t want to see every day. As for the notes themselves, you can make a checklist, a drawing or a doodle, or just type in plain text. You can also record your voice, insert a drawing, or add a collaborator from your contacts. Keep goes one step further for voice recordings: you can have them automatically transcribed into text.

Keep is minimal compared to the other options, but that’s part of the beauty. You don’t have to sort through a bunch of options: just write down whatever’s on your mind. When you open Keep again, you don’t sort through a bunch of folders: everything is either staring you in the face or it’s archived.

How to Set Up Dual SIM Cards on the iPhone XS, Max, and XR

The new iPhone X series—the XS, XS Max, and XR—are the first iPhones to ship with dual SIM tech capabilities. This wasn’t enabled out of the box, but came with the yesterday’s 12.1 update. Here’s what that means.

For dual SIM support, the new iPhone X series phones use a traditional SIM tray for its primary number and an eSIM for the secondary account. While we have a deeper explainer of what that means here, the long and short is that you can’t just pop a pair of SIM cards in your phone and have it work.

Instead, your second carrier needs to support eSIM tech (which most of the big ones do now) and you need to set it up yourself. The good news is that it’s stupid-easy to set up your second carrier. Here’s how.

Note: The primary carriers uses the traditional SIM slot. Only the secondary carrier can use the eSIM slot, so if you only have one carrier then you don’t need to do anything. It’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t yet available on Verizon—more info on that here.

First, jump into the Settings menu. From there, choose the Cellular option.

Tap on Add Cellular Plan, which will immediately open a QR scanner. If your carrier offered a QR code, scan it here. All the pertinent information will be added instantly and you’re good to go.

How to Put Your iPhone or iPad into DFU Mode

iPhones and iPads are pretty good at recovering automatically when they experience issues. Still, there are times when they need a helping hand. We’ve talked before about some basic troubleshooting steps for when your device won’t power on—performing a hard reset and restoring iOS itself—but the final step on that troubleshooting journey, when nothing else works, is the Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode.

Whether you’re jailbreaking, dealing with an expired beta version of iOS, or have just fallen afoul of that latest software update, you might find yourself in a position where your iPhone or iPad refuses to respond. For those situations, getting your device into DFU mode and then performing an iOS update or restoration via iTunes might be your only recourse.

While it’s not a complicated procedure, it can seem daunting. For one thing, the method for entering a device into DFU mode changed when Apple launched the iPhone 7 and then changed yet again with the iPhone 8.

And we’d like to stress this once again: This procedure should be a last resort in your troubleshooting process. You’re going to wipe all the data on your device and then either start over or load a backup. You do have a backup, don’t you?

Step One: Connect Your Device to Your PC or Mac and Open iTunes

You’ll also need to make sure you’re using the latest version of iTunes on your PC or Mac and that you have a Lightning cable handy. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning cable and then open iTunes. This part will remain the same no matter which iPhone or iPad you are restoring.

Step Two: Mash Some Buttons

After connecting the device, you’ll perform a series of button presses to enter DFU mode. The buttons change depending on what version of iPhone you’re using (or if you’re using an iPad).

On iPhone 8, X, XR, XS, XS, and Newer Devices

Ensure your device is turned off. Press and hold the Side button for two seconds. Press and hold the Volume Down button while continuing to hold the Side button for 10 seconds before letting go of the Side button while continuing to hold the Volume Down button for a further 5 seconds. You should be left with an iPhone with a black screen. If you see the “Connect to iTunes” logo, you will need to retry.

At this point, iTunes will recognize a device is connected while in DFU mode. Follow the instructions to restore your device.

iOS 12 Just Got Its First MAJOR Update

Michael Grothaus 31/10/2018 - 2:03pm

Group FaceTime, Depth Control, and more come to iOS!

Yesterday Apple held what is probably its last major event of the year. With it, Apple introduced the all-new iPad Pro with Face ID, the all-new MacBook Air featuring a complete redesign of the beloved laptop, and an updated Mac mini–a computer which has not seen an upgrade in years.

But Apple also released the first major update to its iOS 12 operating system for iPhone and iPad. But just what is new in iOS 12.1? Let’s take a look.

iOS 12.1: Group FaceTime

The biggest new feature in iOS 12.1 is Group FaceTime. Apple actually announced this feature back in June and had planned to ship it with iOS 12 in September, but they held the feature back to make improvements.

But now with the arrival of iOS 12.1 users can now make Group FaceTime audio and video calls with up to a staggering 32 people. Group FaceTime also features cool features like automatic detection of active speakers, ringless notifications, and of course are encrypted end to end so they remain private and viewable only by the participants.

iOS 12.1: 70 New Emoji

It wouldn’t be a new iOS update without support for an obscene number of new emoji. In iOS 12.1 Apple brings a whopping 70 new emoji to iOS. New emoji include softball and lacrosse, llama, mosquito, kangaroo and lobster, bagel, salt, cupcake, leafy greens and mango, and regional specialties like moon cake, red gift envelope and nazar amulet.

iOS 12.1: Dual SIM Support

When Apple introduced the all-new iPhone XS series and iPhone XR the company announced dual sim support. But instead of having two sim card slots, Apple upped the ante by making one SIM and eSim, or electronic sim. But Dual Sim support didn’t ship with the new iPhones.

With iOS 12.1 all the latest iPhones now support the feature. To use it, you’ll need to make sure one of your two carriers support eSims.

iOS 12.1: Depth Control in Camera

The last major feature of iOS 12.1 is Depth Control support for the Camera app. With iOS 12.1, users can now dynamically adjust the depth of field in real time preview in addition to post-capture, enabling more control to create portraits with a beautiful background blur.

iOS 12.1: Other Features

As usual, with any iOS update, Apple also made other small improvements and fixes to the operating system. These include:

  • Improves cellular connectivity for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR
  • Adds the ability to change or reset your child's Screen Time passcode using Face ID or Touch ID
  • Fixes an issue where the sharpest reference frame was not always selected in front facing photos for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR
  • Resolves an issue that caused messages to be merged into one thread when two users were signed in with the same Apple ID on multiple iPhones
  • Addresses an issue that prevented some voicemails from appearing in the Phone app
  • Resolves an issue in the Phone app that could cause phone numbers to appear without their corresponding contact name
  • Fixes an issue that could prevent Screen Time from reporting specific websites in the activity report
  • Addresses an issue that could prevent adding or removing family members from Family Sharing
  • Adds a performance management feature to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down, including the option to disable this feature if an unexpected shutdown occurs, for iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
  • Adds the ability for Battery Health to inform users that it is unable to verify if a genuine Apple battery is in iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR
  • Improves reliability of VoiceOver in Camera, Siri, and Safari
  • Fixes an issue that could cause MDM Device Enrollment to report an Invalid Profile error for some enterprise users

iOS 12.1 is available now as a free download.

Fedora 29 released with support for Modularity

The Fedora Project announced the release of Fedora 29, a new version of the open source Linux distribution, on October 30, 2018.

Fedora 29 introduces the concept of Modularity across all different versions which gives users and administrators more flexibility when it comes to package versions and Fedora.

The new version of the Linux distribution is available as a direct download on the official Get Fedora website. You can download ISO images that have a size of about 1.8 Gigabytes and use Fedora Media Writer.

Existing installations can be upgraded to Fedora 29. The system should display a release notification on the desktop eventually; you can run the following commands from the command prompt to upgrade to Fedora 29 right away.

Note that it is recommended that you back up the system before you perform the upgrade:

  1. sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
  2. sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
  3. sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=29
  4. sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

The installation guide for Fedora 29 provides details. Check out our review of Fedora 28, released earlier in 2018 as well.

Fedora 29

fedora 29

Interested users and administrators find the full release notes on the Fedora Project website. Note that the documentation is incomplete at the time of writing.

The big new feature in Fedora 29 is called Fedora Modularity which gives administrators more flexibility when it comes to upgrade decisions and package requirements.

Modularity lets us ship different versions of packages on the same Fedora base. This means you no longer need to make your whole OS upgrade decisions based on individual package versions.

For example, you can choose Node.js version 8 or version 10, on either Fedora 28 or Fedora 29. Or you can choose between a version of Kubernetes which matches OpenShift Origin, and a module stream which follows the upstream.

The desktop environment GNOME was updated to version 3.30 in Fedora 29. It introduces a number of improvements and changes such as support for VeraCrypt encryption, improved performance and resource use on the desktop, reader view mode in the integrated web browser, or a new podcasts application to manage podcasts.

Other big changes include GNOME 3.30 on the desktop, ZRAM for our ARM images, and a Vagrant image for Fedora Scientific. As always, we’ve integrated a huge number of updated packages as software in the wider open source and free software world continues to grow.

Other changes in Fedora 29 as far as they have been revealed in the release notes:

  • Removal of Legacy GTK+ interface of Wireshark
  • GRUB menu is hidden by default.
  • Noto font for Chinese, Japanese and Korean is the default.
  • Samba 4.9 upgrade.

The team promises to release variants that are not yet available soon.

Closing Words

The new version of Fedora should improve compatibility with video cards, game controllers and features significantly. Users who experienced driver related issues in the past might want to give the new version a go as it may just fix these issues for them as well.
