Celebrating the New Year from Space with @astro_terry
For more photos and videos of Earth as seen from space as well as scenes of Terry’s life aboard the International Space Station, follow @astro_terry and @iss on Instagram.
“In space you see intense colors, shades of blue that I’d never seen before,” says NASA astronaut Terry Virts (@astro_terry), who is currently in orbit above Earth aboard the International Space Station (@iss). Terry has been in space for over 37 days, and he is documenting the experience on Instagram through vivid photography of the earth’s surface. His account also features personal, behind-the-scenes moments from his NASA training that took him from Texas to Kazakhstan.
“It’s been said a thousand times but it’s true: There are no borders that you can see from space, just one beautiful planet,” says Terry. “If everyone saw the Earth through that lens I think it would be a much better place.”
Today, Terry and his fellow crew members will be greeting the New Year from the best seat in the house. “We get to celebrate all 24 time zones. We’ll be over the earth at midnight while in 16 of them,” he says. “But I won’t be awake.”
