“I got my first camera when I was 18. My first true backstage shoot was with Wiz Khalifa. Wiz is probably my favorite rapper of all time. I was at his show and he had just got his purple dreads. There was this yellow wall behind him. I’m like, ‘You mind if I take some pictures of you on this wall?’ And then he came back again two weeks later because he started his tour. I was just with him for those days taking a bunch of photos — just him chilling, smoking, eating, all of that stuff. And then he posted all of those pictures. I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. Maybe this is what people like?’ After that, I started doing more portrait style photography instead of just performances.” —23-year-old music photographer Gunner Stahl (@gunnerstahl.us) on his off-the-cuff backstage artist pics. Gunner — his real name is Jonathan; he picked Gunner because it’s the name of his favorite character in D2: The Mighty Ducks — has photographed everyone from Joey Bada$$ to Rae Sremmurd.
